Me mudo de aqui...

I have a new place to blog:

American Woman 938: A Political Blog

I realize the design is not very exciting, but I'm gonna work on creating my own.

I'll still keep this one up as an archive.  See ya soon!

Jon McCain; Daily Show

The Truth About John McCain
For the past 25 years, John McCain has consistently voted against women's health. From opposing funding for family planning programs to voting against requiring insurance coverage of birth control, McCain has taken extreme positions. He has voted against women's health and has not supported legislation that would help reduce the rate of unintended pregnancies and the need for abortion. This has earned him a zero rating the lowest rating we give in the U.S. Senate.

I always find it ironic that people who are vehemently pro-life are usually (not always, but MOST of the time) also against birth control and better sex education.  If you feel so strongly that having an abortion = murder, wouldn't you want people to have access to the tools that will help them minimize the risk of pregnancy as much as possible???

I know, I know-- most of the time, the reasoning is that abstinence is the answer, because the people who are both pro-life and anti-birth-control live in an idealist world where people wait until marriage to have sex.

People feel very strongly about their views on abortion on both sides of the debate, which is understandable.  (If you're wondering, I'm pro-choice, but that's not what this post is to discuss-- that shall be another time.)  As much as I very much disagree with the pro-life stance, it's a valid opinion, and I respect that.  But when it comes to birth control options and sex education, this is something that everyone needs to be concerned about!  If you're so against abortion, then you need to make it so the *need* for abortion decreases, not to just simply make it illegal.  I'm pro-choice, but not pro-abortion... both men and women should be responsible when participating in sexual acts, and abortion should be a very last resort or used for medical complications (I think a lot of pro-lifers forget about the fact that all sorts of things can go wrong during pregnancy that require an abortion!).  So to also deny birth control is absurd!!

So yeah... another reason not to vote for McCain.  Not that this helped people to not vote for George Bush, but hey, if McCain has been marketed as the "conservative liberals can live with," this helps debunk that!!!

Now for some comic relief:

Last night's Daily Show, re. the flooding in the midwest:

"I remember in 2008, the water went so high it went up to Garry Tuckman's nipples!"
~Jon Stewart

"I've unfortunately been to too many disasters as president."
~Bush
(me: hmm...)

Jon Stewart: "The president was in Europe, Wyatt!"
Wyatt Cenac: "So what, what's your point? It took him forever to get to Katrina.... so by being late to Iowa it shows he's equally indifferent to the suffering of all people?!"

Hahahaha!!! About the flooding... I wonder if all those conservatives in the midwest still think that global climate change is BS.

Bush impeachment; Politics of food

It's official-- I need to revive this blog.  I'm probably going to move it over to blogger or something at some point, though.

Know what's outrageous??  Dennis Kucinich proposed a resolution to impeach President Bush, AND, as of June 11, "The House voted 251 - 156 to send Rep. Dennis Kucinich's (D-OH) resolution, calling for Pres. Bush's impeachment, to the Judiciary Cmte" (cspan.org)  No-- that's not what's outrageous.  What's outrageous-- the mainstream media has hardly made a buzz about this.  You know, when Bill Clinton was about to be impeached, the press was ALL OVER that.  Now, who is it again, saying that we have liberal media?  Oh yeah-- the conservative pundits who are spreading the "news," brought to you by Rupert Murdoch.  How much more evidence do you need to show we have conservative-biased news???

We now move from Washington to Burlington, VT-- reading from the Burlington Free Press their article, Pollan and the Politics of Food.
An excerpt:

"Part of our problem," he continued, "is our ideology of food." Americans, he suggested, have their own paradox like the French paradox in which, he reminded the audience, "red-wine swilling, foie-gras chomping, triple-creme cheese-eating people nevertheless, for mysterious reasons, live longer than we do and have much less heart disease than we do."

The American paradox described by Pollan is not nearly so tasty. Americans, he said, are "a people who obsess unreasonably about their dietary health and shop according to health claims, who nevertheless are one of the least healthy populations in the world. ... How can we be so health-conscious and be in such bad health?"

Pollan believes that much of the blame can be placed on a "narrow, reductive ideology" he has dubbed "nutritionism," which he was quick to assure the nutritionists in the room is not their science, although there are connections.

Basically, according to Pollan, eating healthy means eating whole foods-- better to have whole-grain oatmeal than Cheerios.  The differences are, one is healthier AND cheaper, but the other creates more corporate profits.  Speaking of corporate influence, I loved this passage:

In addition, the focus of the nation's dietary recommendations is almost always nutrients, not whole foods. A perfect example, he said, was one of the first dietary goals developed in 1977 to help address the sharp increase in heart disease. The initial expert recommendation was: "Eat less red meat," but pressure from the beef industry revised the guideline to: "Choose meats that will reduce your saturated fat intake." The results of such policies, Pollan observed, is that we eat 300 calories more per day than we did in 1980 and we're fatter and sicker than we've ever been.

See, those hippie, vegan, let's-eat-organic-food, let's-eat-local, we-only-shop-at-farmer's-markets freaks might not be so insane after all!!!  Although, I don't agree with their claim that drinking cow's milk is unnatural or unhealthy-- our European ancestors drank it for centuries without having high cancer or heart disease rates.  But, I will have another post later about why PETA's propaganda bothers me.

OK, that's all for now, folks!

Go Dems!

It's been a long time since I last posted.  Doesn't mean I haven't been following anything... just means that I haven't bothered much with Xanga.  I just shut down my personal account.  I spent a few days this summer exporting those entries the old-fashioned way-- copy and paste!

This is a political blog... so thus, here is the political component to this entry:

Dems have control of Congress!  Yay!  Things should get interesting....  Though I also have to wonder, how convenient is it that many repbulicans were involved in a number of scandles that were coincidentally uncovered in the months preceding the 2006 election?
Very convenient for the Democrats.
Not that I don't appreciate the convenience... but I really don't believe in coincidence!

Gay Politicians

Long time no post, eh? hehe.....

Gay Politicians Have it Both Ways?

The basic theme, here, is that there's an organization that specifically endorses Gay/Lesbian Politicians; however, these politicians would rather, understandably, that they be known for their name and the issues they stand for, rather than the token gay/lesbian.

I really liked this excerpt:
"In 2002, my opponent used the issue of my being gay against me," Roth said. "The news media reported it widely. Yet I unseated him. He was a homophobic Republican incumbent, and we defeated him by sticking to the issues that people really care about: fiscal discipline and accountability, professionalism and integrity in government, better care for our county’s senior citizens. Those are the issues that matter to people."

Amazing... we actually have people here who care about issues that matter!!!! This gives me a little hope.... I guess it's more of a question about what kind of news people are getting (like all the BS Fox spews out), than a question of what issues really matter, because clearly, people *do* care more about the economy than about if their gay neighbors down the street get married. But since people are such sheep, they listin to these conservative nut cases telling them to watch out for the "homosexual agenda."

Well in any case, I found this article somewhat encouraging.
